MasterWorks IV: All Things Magestic
January 25, 2025 7:30 PM
Overview
This concert will be conducted by guest conductor, David Hayes.
Ever aware of the shadow of Beethoven looming over any German composer who dared to write a symphony in the 19th century, Johannes Brahms took nearly fifteen years to write his first, and it has been nearly that long since it was last heard on the Umstattd Hall stage. This beautiful and emotion-filled work helped to usher in the romantic period of symphonic writing, which produced some of the most beloved pieces in the orchestral canon.
The evening begins with one of the most exciting concert openers ever written, Dvořák’s Carnival Overture, which encapsulates the human capacity for unbridled joy. Celebrated living American composer Jennifer Higdon’s All Things Majestic is a sweeping tribute to the grandeur and beauty of America’s National Parks. We welcome to the podium guest conductor David Hayes, teacher and lifelong mentor of our music director, Matthew Jenkins Jaroszewicz.
• Carnival Overture – Antonin Dvořák
• All Things Majestic – Jennifer Higdon
• Symphony No. 1 in C minor – Johannes Brahms
